Halibut Steaks

These "nice and thick" halibut steaks are absolutely delicious...full of that wonderful mild non-fishy flavor with pure snowy white meat that flakes easily and has a great mouth-feel texture. These steaks are a good choice for main course entrees.

Halibut steaks are also great for outdoor barbecues, not to mention, being very versatile in the kitchen. They are excellent broiled, baked, and grilled.

Halibut is an excellent source of high quality protein and minerals, and also low in sodium, fat and calories.

Portion and Packaging Sizes

Our halibut steaks are frozen and individually vacuum-sealed in about 1/3 to 2/3 pound packages. Halibut steaks contain few bones and have skin around their outsides.

Serving Sizes

Halibut steaks are usually served on a one steak per person basis, but at times, steaks can be quite large and need to be split in half for smaller portions.

Storing and Thawing

Halibut steaks can be thawed under refrigeration about 12 hours before preparation. The vacuum-sealed packages can also be ran under cold water to speed this up considerably.

Halibut are among the largest fish in the sea and the largest of all the flatfish. They can grow to more than 8 ft long and 500 lbs.  The largest concentration of Alaska halibut is in the Gulf of Alaska, with most in the Kodiak Island area. A smaller amount exist in the Bering Sea.

Fishing Seasons

In 1995, Alaska halibut fishing switched to an individual vessel quota system which has increased the availability of fresh halibut to an 8 month annual span, while also increasing the quality of the halibut landed.

Availability

Alaska halibut is a large, almost annual fishery, making it available all year round. Fresh-frozen processing and glazing allows halibut to be kept frozen for long periods of time with insured quality and means of distribution. Fresh halibut can be commonly found in many local Alaskan fish markets throughout the Northwest.
