Size and Packaging

Norton Sound red king crab are smaller than their nearby cousins in Bristol Bay. There is an average of 20+ legs per 10 lbs. Even though they are smaller they are still filled with sweet "red" king crab. They're great for large groups or crab feasts.

Storing & Refrigeration

Fresh king crab should be refrigerated immediately and served within 2 days of arrival.  Left-over king crab (which is rare) should be used within a couple days of your meal.

Norton Sound is located on the west coast of northern Alaska. On her northern shores lies the famous town of Nome. Recently, a large seafood plant was built in Nome to harvest king crab and other Alaska seafood. Many of the Norton Sound fishermen are based in Nome as well. Red king crab caught within the Norton Sound district are allowed to be smaller than the larger size restrictions that the main Bristol Bay red king crab fishery holds.

Fishing Seasons

Availability

Norton Sound 's main red king crab fishery starts in July and last for several months. The winter fishery is of a different kind. With Norton Sound frozen over in the winter months, the fishery adjusts by leaving their frozen boats in the harbor and traveling out onto the ice in snow mobiles or other vehicles. They cut large holes in the ice, dropping pots down, and continue to fish for that prized king crab.
